Speaker: Ahmed Johnson, Reference Librarian, Library of Congress
Ahmed Johnson has been employed by the Library of Congress for over 25 years working in varying levels of responsibility. His career began as a high school student working part time in the Collections Access, Loan and Management (CALM) Division. The CALM Division has custodial responsibilities for the Library’s massive general collections. While pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampton University, he continued his professional development training in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division as a Reference Assistant. While there, he assisted patrons who had an interest in the personal papers of noteworthy people throughout American History. These papers include former US Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, and the NAACP organizational records.
In 2004, Ahmed began working in the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room as a Reference Librarian and was primed as the African American Genealogy Specialist. He has lectured at national, state, and local conferences promoting the collections and services available in the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room, as well as presentations with a focus on African American genealogical sources at the Library of Congress. He has revised and developed, “African American Family Histories and Related Works in the Library of Congress” which is a bibliography of printed and digital sources related to African American genealogy at the Library of Congress.
